Genital warts
Remind me what these are
Genital warts, for women vaginal warts, are a product of a common virus, the human papillomavirus (HPV).
HPV is spread through direct contact during sexual activity. This can be during vaginal sex, anal sex, sharing sex toys and in rare cases, by oral sex.
HPV has an incubation period (period in which it's developing but not yet active) that can last for months, and a person will not know that they have the virus. Similarly, when someone first finds a lesion or open sore, it might be that they have had the virus for a long time and it is the first time that it has become present.
There are also people who might never know they had or have the virus because they never show any symptoms.
I have it. Now what?
Treatment for vaginal warts may include an ointment to apply on the warts, surgery to cut, burn or laser the warts, or freezing to remove the warts. Although there is not a current cure to rid oneself of the virus, in some cases the body will fight off the virus over time.
