Molar pregnancy
What is it?
A molar pregnancy can also be referred to as HM, or a hydatidiform mole. It is non-cancerous but is a pre-malignant (pre-cancerous) disease, meaning that it has the potential to become cancerous later on.
A molar preganancy is a rare complication that can occur during pregnancy and can develop in two types:
- complete HM
- partial HM
HM can be identified by an abnormal growth of cells called trophoblasts that have developed into the placenta (the organ that develops during pregnancy that helps feed the baby).
What's the difference?
In complete HM the placental tissue is abnormal and swollen without there being any fetal tissue.
In partial HM there is both normal placental tissue as well as abnormal placental tissue and the fetus might be starting to form.
Although there can be fetal formation with a molar pregnancy, the fetus (baby) will not be able to survive to full term and will usually be miscarried early in the pregnancy.
It is important to diagnose a molar pregnancy early on to avoid any serious complications later.
