Ovarian cyst

What is it?

An ovarian cyst may also be referred to as an adnexal mass from a medical professional. It is a common female gynae problem with a variety of types that affects women of all ages.

Because there are many types of an ovarian cyst, it will usually be diagnosed by performing a few tests including a pelvic examination, an ultrasound and then potentially followed with lab work.

You said there are types. What are they?

The types of ovarian cysts that are non-cancerous (most common) and are connected to your hormones and period are the following:

  • functional (physiologic) cyst
  • corpus luteal cyst
  • uterine leiomyoma
  • theca lutein cyst
  • polycystic ovaries
  • endometrioma

In addition to the hormone related cysts, there are cysts called simple cysts, dermoid cysts, and leiomyomatas.

Along with these there are also masses that can be determined as borderline or malignant, so it's important to check for pain in the pelvic region.

Diagnosis & Treatment

The doctor will usually be able to tell the type of ovarian cyst you have by doing an ultrasound as well as bloodwork.

The course of treatment will depend on what your doctor sees in scans and bloodwork which could range from not needing to do anything to treat the cyst, to antibiotics or surgery.
