Pubic lice (crabs)

What is it?

Pubic lice are small insects that are found attached to the hair in the pubic area that resemble tiny crabs. They are most comonly spread by sex and therefore attach to the coarse hair in the pubic region (ie vagina), however they can also attach to hair such as the

  • eyebrows
  • chest
  • beard
  • armpits

and from sharing clothing, bed linens or towels with someone who has an infestation.

The lice will cause intense itching and can also cause pale blue spots (bruises) where they have been feeding.

Pubic lice can also cause infections in areas where a person has itched the skin into an open wound, or pink eye if they get into a person's eye lashes.

How to treat

Treating pubic lice (crabs) is pretty simple. You can purchase an over the counter cream that kills the insects and their eggs if you use it as directed on the cream.
