Vaginal Cancer

What is it?

Vaginal cancer is much less common out of the gynecological cancers, with cervical, ovarian, uterine/endometrial cancers are occuring more frequently, however cancers of the gynae region are not uncommon.

What are the types?

The majority of vaginal tumors are from a type of cancer called squamous cell carcinoma. This type usually affects women in their 60s, however it has been seen in women in their 20s and 30s as well. Other types of vaginal cancers include melanoma, sarcoma and adenocarcinoma.

When vaginal cancer does occur, rarely does it come from the vagina itself, but rather is spread from the

  • endometrium
  • cervix
  • vulva
  • ovary
  • breast
  • rectum
  • kidneys

Vaginal cancer is similar to cervical cancer because it has been linked to having HPV, the human papillomavirus infection, so it is important to get vaccinated and go to your normal check ups with your gynaecologist.
