Vaginal yeast infection

Talk to me.

A vaginal yeast infection, also called thrush, is one of the most common causes of vaginal itching and is not considered to be an STD (passed during sex).

It is a fungal infection that can be caused from a variety of things such as

  • certain antibiotics
  • being pregnant
  • being diabetic
  • a weakened immune system
  • oral contraceptives
  • hormone therapy

Also, some women are more genetically prone to have them that others.

Who's more at risk?

Vaginal yeast infections are most common among women who still have their periods, and can be diagnosed by extreme itchiness of the vagina and vulva as well as thick, white odor-free or watery vaginal discharge.

During their reproductive years, most women will have at least 1 to 2 episodes of a yeast infection.

How can I prevent them before they happen?

To avoid having many episodes of the infection, it has been advised to limit

  • wearing tight undergarments
  • douching
  • being in hot tubs and hot baths
  • using scented products in the area such as bubble bath, pads and tampons
  • using antibiotics for colds and other minor illnesses
  • staying in a wet swimsuit or damp workout gear after use
