Cold sores are very common and are caused by herpes simplex virus type 1. They are contagious and spread from person to person by the following:
- saliva
- kissing
- sharing lipstick or other physical contact

There is no permanent cure for cold sores, but when you get one it can usually clear up on its own within 10 days. In the meantime, there are things that can be done to make them less painful such as tablets, creams, and cold sore patches. These treatments wil also help protect the skin while it heals.
While you're waiting for it to heal...
You don't want to engage in sexual activity involving the mouth. Although cold sores are caused by herpes simplex virus type 1 and only rarely caused by the genital version (herpes simplex virus type 2), having oral sex while you have a cold sore can still spread it to your partners genitals.
