HPV

What's the scoop?

HPV, or human papillomavirus, is a very common sexually transmitted disease that is spread through skin-to-skin contact during vaginal, anal or oral sex. Almost all people will develop HPV at some point in their lifetime, and in most cases, HPV infections can be fought off by the body in 12 to 24 months.

There are over 100 types of the HPV virus, some which can cause warts and others that can lead to a variety of cancer, including cervical, anal, vulval, vaginal and neck cancer. Because of this, preventative measures are really important in order to protect yourself from future health issues.

Is there any treatment?

There is no current treatment for HPV but there are vaccines that can protect people against both warts and cancers which are recommended for children between the ages of 11-12.
