Stopped or missed period

What's the scoop?

A woman's period happens on average every 28 days, however it is normal to have a period cycle anywhere between 21-35 days.

There are many reasons why your period might stop and it is relatively common to happen at some point during your childbearing years.

Causes might include

  • pregnancy
  • stress
  • losing a significant amount of weight quickly
  • being overweight
  • being too active i.e. working out too often
  • taking birth control
  • having PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome)
  • beginning menopause

There are also certain medication that can make a period stop, such as those for heart disease, diabetes and an overactive thyroid.

How can I fix it?

If you're worried about your period stopping, see your gynaecologist to get checked out. Treatment may not be necessary for an absent period and will depend on the cause.
